We are Home Grown

Valuing self-sufficiency, local independence and sustainable food production,
Home Grown was created as the solution. Our greenhouse and barn are home
to our sustainably grown produce and soon-to-be pollution free Tilapia.
Our poly-culture system utilizes the nutrient water from our fish to irrigate
both our hydroponic and soil production. Home Grown adds absolutely
no antibiotics or dyes in the grow out process of the fish nor do we use
any synthetic nutrients, herbicides, fungicides or pesticides on our produce.
Home Grown Farm and Market is heated and electricity is generated
using vegetable oil we collect from area businesses.

Energy efficiency and sustainable food production are not just quaint words.
These 2 concepts are integrated with Home Grown’s ability to produce quality food at an affordable price.
Switching from raising Rainbow Trout to Tilapia came after a complete re-evaluation of these goals.
Tilapia are a warm water species that give live birth. This means no longer will we need to order
fingerlings every 3 months, as was the case with Rainbow Trout. Tilapia produce a white meat that is versatile
in the kitchen without a strong fishy flavor. They also tolerate different growing conditions as long as we keep
the water warm.

Growing tropical plants with tropical fish seemed a perfect match.
We planted papayas, passion fruit and a kind of strawberry that loves the heat
and humidity. We found that peppers and eggplants are perennials and enjoy
this climate as well. What was a big surprise was that our Mediterranean fig is
thriving and producing figs and a date seed planted as an experiment last year is
also growing well. Energy efficiency took on a new meaning this year!

Under tank heating coils that circulate warm water were put in for the Tilapia and
a new shed was put onto the barn which is housing a boiler system and diesel generator.
Our heating and electrical systems run on straight veggie oil.
